The Libre chain is secured by its decentralized network of validators. These validator nodes are independently owned and located all over the world.
Libre validator nodes provide APIs for submitting transactions, chain history for wallets and applications, as well as validation of blocks for which validators are paid.
Validators are paid for each block on the Libre chain that they produce. There is a halvening schedule for block pay which occurs on a superblock. A superblock happens every 15,768,000 seconds.
Initially, validators were paid 4 LIBRE per block and there will be 2 halvenings, one at 6 months and one at 12 months. The block rewards have a terminal rate of 1 LIBRE per block.
The Libre ecosystem consists of three main types of nodes, each with different functions and requirements:
Function: Serve API requests, provide chain history, and relay transactions
Difficulty: Easy to set up and maintain
Requirements: Basic server hardware with sufficient storage
Rewards: None directly, but they support applications built on Libre
Ideal for: Application developers, service providers, and community members
Function: Produce and validate blocks, maintain consensus, serve APIs
Difficulty: Moderate to set up, requires ongoing maintenance and monitoring
Requirements: Higher-grade hardware, reliable connectivity, 24/7 operation
Rewards: Block production rewards in LIBRE tokens
Ideal for: Dedicated operators with infrastructure experience
Function: Validate and process cross-chain transactions between Bitcoin and Libre
Difficulty: Advanced, typically operated alongside validator nodes
Requirements: High-performance hardware, dedicated Bitcoin node
Rewards: Transaction fees in multiple currencies:
BTC fees from validating Bitcoin peg-in/peg-out transactions
USDT fees from processing stablecoin transfers
Ideal for: Existing validators seeking additional revenue streams
Most CrossLink operators also run validator nodes, enhancing both the security of the Libre network and the cross-chain bridge while maximizing rewards through multiple fee sources.
For detailed information on running a CrossLink node, see the Libre CrossLink documentation.

All validators must review the Libre Governance Docs - which outline the minimum requirements and responsibilities.
